Job Title: Behavior Technician

Pay Rate Range: $20.00 to $23.00/hour (Dependent on Experience)

Job Description:

This position delivers person-centered and behavioral support to individuals with varying degrees of Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and/or related conditions as well as mental health diagnosis and complex medical needs. The Behavioral Technician provides direct assistance, supervision, and behavioral management in addition to teaching home and community based community living service categories. The Behavior Tech (I) promotes community participation and integration to increase individuals independence and enable their freedom to pursue joy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct care under limited supervision  

  • Evaluate behaviors, monitor progress, and implement applied techniques

  • Implement program and service outcomes under limited supervision.

  • Follow programming, interventions, protocol and/or procedures outlined in the Individual Abuse Prevention Plan (IAPP), Self- Management Assessment (SMA), Coordinated Service and Support Plan Addendum (CSSP-A), Individual Service Plan (ISP), Emergency Back up Plan, Crisis Response and Prevention Plan, and Personal Safety plan created by the Designated Manager. 

  • Monitor the environment, eliminate problem behaviors, and utilize appropriate procedures to ensure the safety of the individuals served.

  • Utilize non-violent interventions, positive support strategies, or permitted actions to de-escalate a behavior. BrightPath does not allow the use of any prohibited procedures including physical, mechanical, manual, or chemical restraints and does not allow the Emergency Use of Manual Restraints (EUMR) to de-escalate a behavior or event

  • Monitor health care needs as assigned in the individual’s CSSP-A

  • Administer medication and complete Medication Administration Record (MAR) as assigned in the individual’s CSSP-A

  • Coordinate or schedule appointments and accompany individuals to their appointments as needed. 

  • Assist with the household needs of individuals such as light cleaning, organization, meal planning, cooking

  • Document detailed daily progress notes and behavioral notes, and incident reports

  • Participate in activities within the community with the individuals served

  • Collaborate with the Designated Manager to develop supports and outcomes for the individuals served

  • Share behavioral, health, or program concerns with the Designated Manager

  • Attend and complete all required training, including staff meetings, and 1:1 supervision  as instructed by the Designated Manager

  • Teach, coach, and model essential life skills, communication, social skills and maintain proper boundaries

  • Practice coping skills with the individual served

  • Assist with completion of self-care needs and encourage individuals to increase daily self-care skills

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

Holds a bachelor’s degree in one of the behavioral sciences or related field to developmental disabilities (e.g mental health, psychology, social work, special education, speech pathology, or occupational therapy) AND has at least 1 year of experience working with individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities/related conditions 

OR 1 of the 3 options below:

  1. An associate degree in a field related to human services or public relations AND 2 years of full-time experience providing direct care to individuals with Intellectual/Developmental disabilities and/or related conditions as well as mental health diagnosis and complex medical needs.

  2. A diploma in a field related to human services from an accredited postsecondary institution AND 3 years of full-time experience providing direct care to individuals with Intellectual/Developmental disabilities and/or related conditions as well as mental health diagnosis and complex medical needs.

  3. A minimum of 50 hours education and training related to human services and disabilities AND 4 years of full-time experience providing direct care to individuals with iIntellectual/Developmental disabilities and/or related conditions as well as mental health diagnosis and complex medical needs.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 1+ year of experience working with individuals who have high behaviors (biting, hitting, kicking) preferred

  • 1+ year of experience with working individual with severe and persistent mental Illness and chronic medical conditions preferred

  • 1+ year experience with implementing Positive Support Strategies and/or behavior management techniques.

  • Strong communication and documentation skills to write narratives in grammatically correct sentences.

  • Ability to interpret behavioral trends; Experience with person-centered thinking and planning preferred

  • Judgment and decision-making skills to handle crisis situations and day-to-day events

  • Have demonstrable working knowledge on vulnerable adult’s laws, 245D statutes, and other pertinent state regulations applicable to HCBS

  • Have a valid Driver’s License and maintain a working vehicle 

Physical Requirements

Please note that all physical requirements listed might not be required at all sites; refer to specific individual needs

  • Walking on an on-going basis

  • Support individuals by transferring them in/onto wheelchair, stand by assist, or holding them upright be able to lift at least 40lbs on occasions (individual specific)

  • Climb stairs occasionally

  • Reach and grip with hands frequently

  • Stoop, kneel, crouch on occasion

Environmental Factors:

  • Works 1:1 at the individual’s home on an on-going basis

  • Has public contact 

  • Drive frequently

  • Possibility of Pets at individual’s home
